Demonstrates strength of Mini- and Junior Section

Three Warrington Junior Teams Progress To Lancashire Cup Semi-Finals

Three of Warrington’s junior sides have again achieved success in the Lancashire Cup competition. Convincing quarter-final victories by the Under 14s, Under 15s and Under 16s, saw all three teams progress to their age group semi-finals.

The Under 14s demolished Liverpool St Helens by 59-7. The teams turned round with Warrington just 15-3 ahead, thanks to tries from Jude Lightfoot, Rorio Zheng and Charlie Bancroft. However, the second half saw the floodgates open with second tries from Rorio Zheng, Charlie Bancroft and Jude Lightfoot, and contributions from Christian Johnston and Joe Malley. They will now meet Littleborough in the semi-finals.

The Under 15s faced a harder task against Aldwinians. The first half saw the sides evenly matched, with Warrington just ahead by 10-7 thanks to a try from Archie Kellett and a conversion and a penalty from Will Uttley. The second half saw them quickly surge into a comfortable lead, as the forwards built a solid platform to allow winger Mark Ravenscroft to scorch over for two tries. Aldwinians replied with a well-taken try from their left wing but Warrington closed out the game with a poacher’s effort from scrum half Charlie Hughes to make the final score 31-12. They now face a tough match against Waterloo in the semi-final.

Warrington’s Under 16s were looking to avenge last season’s semi-final defeat by Heatom Moor. And they did so in style with a seven try display of brilliant open rugby, which saw a hat-trick from star winger Roma Zheng and a man-of-the-match performance from hooker Matt Bullock. The squad are now looking forward to their semi-final encounter with Sefton, which will mark the sixth consecutive year that the team has reached a semi-final or final of the Lancashire Cup.

All semi-finals will be played on 8th April, with all finals taking place on 29th April.

Chairman of Mini- and Junior Rugby at Warrington, Andy Kellett comments, “These successes demonstrate just how strong our Mini-and Junior section is. And it’s also heart-warming to see lads progress from Junior to senior rugby. At the moment, seven of our current first team have come up through the junior ranks, while the last first team game saw two of our current Colts side taking the field. It all bodes well for the future.”
