Altrincham-Kersal 3rd XV 76 Warrington 3rd XV 28
In a game of two halves, with honours roughly shared in the first period, Warrington’s third team was completely overrun in the second half by a rampant Altrincham back line.
Warrington opened their account with a well-taken try from full back Andy Almond, converted by Sam Nichols. Altrincham were soon stung into response with two converted tried through their excellent backs, before the visitors came back when Sam Nichols exploited excellent work by his forwards to force his way over for a try which he converted. Altrincham scored another converted try before Lewis Horrocks completed a strong Warrington drive to touch down under the posts. Sam Nichols converted to level the scores. However, Altrincham piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes of the first half to score two further unconverted tries.
The second half saw the Altrincham backs assume total control to score a further 45 points but Warrington had the last word when Sam Nichols took three defenders with him to score his third try, which he then converted.
“This game showed once again that there is no substitute for pace,” was the philosophical appraisal of Dave Nichols, who had dragged his ageing 6foot 3inch frame out of retirement to play one last game with his son. “Mind you, it was great to see Sam claim a hat trick,” he added.
