Warrington 3rd XV 36 Sefton 2nd XV 17
A young Warrington side managed to contain the strength of a much more experienced Sefton fifteen to run out eventual winners of an entertaining game at Walton Lea Road on Saturday.
Warrington soon showed that there is no substitute for pace when backs and forwards combined beautifully to run in two first half tries, the first from Dan Reid and the second from Jayesh Kerai. Both were converted by Pat Roberts. Sefton replied with a penalty and the sides turned round with Warrington 14-3 in the lead.
This lead was soon increased when Tony Fretwell forced his way over through a disintegrating line-out and Andy Little converted. Sefton responded with a converted try through their heavyweight pack but a signature 50 yard effort from Mark Tickle, converted by Andy Little restored the Warrington margin. This was further increased by an Andy Little penalty before Sefton came back again when they took advantage of a mix-up at a ruck and powered over. However, the result was sealed when Tony Fretwell took a crash ball to surge over and allow Andy Littler his third successful conversion.
“Our young pack faced a big challenge today and didn’t take one step back,” said acting skipper Tony Fretwell.
