Warrington's Youth Shines Through

With 2 games in 3 days Warrington 3rd team rang the changes for the visit of Marple 2nds on a cold but clear Bank holiday Monday. The club selected a squad of players aged 21 and under, with 99% of the group having coming through our own mini and junior system. It was good to see that Marple brought a fairly young squad to Walton Lea and the game was set fair to provide some exciting entertainment for a large crowd.

Warrington started the stronger of the two teams and quickly built a healthy lead through the impressive Downes and Pennington. The visitors showed glimpses of their own strengths and at times were able to put the home side under pressure in dangerous areas of the pitch. It was the young Warrington side that dominated however and the crowd was treated to a display of skilful and expansive rugby that showcased the deep pool of young talent that exists in the club. Jeffers, Riley and Ryder were excellent in the back row with Sheppey and Horricks impressing up front. In the backs Whelan and Brazendale provided power and pace with Arnold and Hockenhull pulling the strings with great maturity. Warrington ran in nine try's in total with Marple fighting all the way and despite being reduced to 14 men scoring three of their own.

At the final whistle the Warrington crowd hurried off for the start of the RFU National U17s Cup final knowing that they had witnessed not only a superb game of rugby but also the fruits of years of hard work by an outstanding mini and junior section. What followed in the second game of the day not only underlined the depth of ability at Warrington RUFC but also delivered a ringing endorsement for the overall strategy of the club. The future is not just bright.......it's blinding!!
