We feared the worst, but the rain held off!
Following on from last weeks defeat at the hands of Vale we again could only muster 17 from a squad of 29 due to injuries and unavailability for the trip over to the wilds of Caldy. This meant that again a couple of the lads had to play out of position but you wouldn't have known it.
We played 3x20 minutes and from the off we took the game to Caldy with some superb slick handling working the ball out to the wings. However, Caldy are a very forward led team and there aggressive rucking turned the ball over a couple of times giving them territory. We defended the line well, keeping them out with some excellent tackling from James, the 2 Joes, Isaac, Riley and others. It was from defence that we opened the scoring, Jude Smith
kicking out, James and Leo burst through a static Caldy line in chase, James showed good footballing skills to kick the ball towards the posts and Leo pounced with Caldy players breathing down his neck. Jude S converted.
We doubled the lead a few minutes later when we worked the ball out from a tight maul into Lightnin's hands who carved out an arcing run to go in at the corner. Smithy, who's kicking all day was superb added the extras.
Just before the end of the first period Caldy forced there way over, they have some great ball carriers and one of these big lads muscled his way over the line to keep them within touching distance.
In the second period we again had to weather some Caldy pressure but our defensive game today was excellent, big tackles from the usual suspects Jim,Leo etc,but also from Jack D,KB and others kept Caldy out. We scored again when another Smithy kick was chased down by Nathan who collided at pace with the Caldy fullback as the ball bounced up into his hands leaving both of them on the ground, but not before he managed to offload to Lightnin' who scored in the corner. Smithy converted.
Nathan then also got in on the action 5 minutes later, shaking off his collision to deservedly go in at the corner to stretch the lead. Smithy unfortunately slipped taking the kick and comically ended up on his arse.
Caldy scored next, with there fast winger going in before Jim made things safe with a late try to seal a good 14-31 win. All the lads stepped up today against a very good side, Siggers had a great game until an arm injury forced him off , KB carried the ball well and tacked hard as did Jack D who was great at scrum half today. Henry was sure footed at full back and the entire forward line stepped up against some big lads.
Thanks to Caldy for the hospitality, next week Macc.
