U14s - Warrington v Macclesfield
Not our best showing but a good result against a decent opposition.
I wasn't there this week but thanks to Wingman for the scoring and the report -
I’d like to say that our performance was due to the fact that we were once again missing quite a few of the key players due to league commitments but in truth there were problems across the team. Balls were flung into space to hands that had forgotten how to catch, defence was patchy, especially in the forwards and support runners were ignored to give the ball carrier greater, if temporary glory. That we won was more down to Macclesfield’s errors than our abilities and at times they really did seem to be the stronger team. No doubt some players will feel that the win was enough.
It started as it went on, sloppy handling and a decided lack of energy but we still managed to get the ball wide to Jude S to open the scoring with a fine try on the right. No conversion to add so 5-0 to us after 5 minutes. Macc came back strongly and drove us towards our lines and it was only a good clearance from Jude L that saved the day. Soon afterwards Nathan gathered the ball form their clearance and had an excellent run down the line to score between the posts. Jude converted to put us 12-0 up.
Macc responded well and their dominance up front gave them their first when they drove over from a scrum. No conversion so still 12-5 to us. Our weak defence, again against a driving pack, then gifted them another converted try just before half time. 12-10 to us at the break.
We seemed to wake up a bit in the second half. A great break from Jude L gave us another score just after the kick off. Jude S converted to give us a bit of a buffer at 19-10. We made a couple of subs at this point, Ed, Jack W and Rorio, making his first appearance since his injury, came on and there seemed to be an immediate uptick in pace. Rorio showed the Macc lads his heels straight away and shot down the left wing to add his own name to the score board. Chris converted to give us a 26-10 lead.
We are spending more time in the opposition half but we are still lethargic and error prone. Fortunately a big error by Macc, when one of their lads tries to make a break from their try line only to lose the ball, gifts us another try , scored and converted by CJ. 33-10 And finally a decent bit of handling sees the ball get Joe E who makes a lovely break for the line to score. Conversion missed but the game is won. Final score 38-10.
Although it was a good result as a team we could have done better. Individually there was still some good play; Joe E was strong in defence and always a threat with the ball in hand, CJ and Jack D were effective half backs, Jude S played well out of position on the wing and Rhys was again busy across the field. Unfortunately, too many areas where we let ourselves down, in particular basic handling and defence and possibly most importantly, communication, which was generally poor and hampered by too much in-team bickering. Next week more formidable opponents when we face Lymm. Let’s hope we’re ready!
