Fylde Round 3
Another quality game!
In the third installment of the Wire/Fylde series the boys came out on top in what was a good and well needed run out for both sides. The respect for each other shone through in a game that could have gone either way following an end to end first third which caused smoke to come from my pen as i struggled to keep up with the frantic nature of the opening game.
The 'A' teams played first and the similarities between the sides was stark, pace in abundance and quick hands from both sides contributed to the spectacle. Fylde opened the scoring, a nippy winger tearing down the line from half way and a couple of sloppy tackles from us let him in. The kicker was unlucky to see the conversion hit the upright.
We were back on level terms from the restart, the Fylde full back spilling the kick for Leo to scoop up and run it in. We missed the kick. A few minutes later Fylde regained the lead when there number 4 picked the ball out from a breakdown and showed great strength and speed as he skipped left and right to go in under the posts. Nathan summed up our determination not to lose however, superbly charging down the conversion.
Charlie was instrumental in the next 2 tries, CJ found him in a bit of space and after stepping a Fylde player he went in to score. He then set the next try up running straight through the Fylde line and offloading to Lightnin' who was on his shoulder for a spectacular score.
After a brief respite the second third carried on from were the first finished, Big O finishing of a move that started with a crunching Joe E tackle in which he managed to turn the ball over, finding Owen who span out of a couple of tackles to score.
CJ added a second try moments later following a lovely offload from Jim, CJ who was immense all morning, creating numerous opportunities for others to score also kicked the conversion. CJ was also involved in the next try, spotting space on the left and placing a lovely weighted kick across field for Will to catch and dive over.
Fylde are one of the best teams around at our age group and don't lose often, they came right back at us with 2 tries in the last 5 minutes. Both coming down the left wing despite Joe E and new boy Sean's ferocious defence, Fyldes pace and support play was excellent and put them in touching distance before the whistle went.
The last third was a mixed team, and as the subs rolled on and off for both sides it made for a scrappy affair. We went 4 tries up before Fylde managed to pull one back, we managed to turn over a Fylde scrum, from this Charlie laid on a nice little grubber kick which Nathan and him chased, Charlie just beating Nathan and the Fylde full back to score.
Frustrations boiled over a little and a Fylde yellow card for being a bit to vocal didn't help there cause. This left more gaps for Charlie to exploit and he went in again 2 minutes later. The third try came from Nathan followed a well executed Rev D and the 4th from Lightnin' who showed good footballing skills to kick the ball down field a couple of times before pouncing to score.
Overall a great performance (from both sides) Fylde are very worthy opponents and we always have to be on top form to get anything from them which the lads were today. Some standout performances - Charlie, simply brilliant today, pace and power with some great unselfish play, Nathan - was right in Fyldes face, chased every ball, stopped the conversion and scored a great try, Will - a fantastic try, Joe E - a tackling machine, Sean - you wouldn't have guessed it was only his second game, he ran straight and hard and put in some excellent try saving tackles, CJ - was the heartbeat of the team today.
Thanks To Fylde for travelling and the great game, Ian for reffing and all the boys for a very enjoyable mornings rugby. Next week - Waterloo in the cup!
