The under 13's put in a mixed bag of performances at the Harrogate festival.
An early start beckoned as we had to be in Harrogate for 9am, despite this the lads put in a couple of decent performances until the early start, to many sweets, injuries and various other excuses contributed to us getting steamrollered by hosts Harrogate in the final.
Tim and the Manchester lads were also in attendance in what was a decent, well organised festival. The playing format was a little confusing however but we eventually worked out that we would play 1 game, then meet the winner/loser of another and then the same again in the final match.
First up, Oadby Wyggs from Leicester. We got off to a perfect start when Charlie pounced on a loose ball, popping it up to Isaac who spotted Lightnin' tearing down the wing, a quick pass out and he was in. Jude L quickly followed it up with a second, Leo added a third just before halftime when he cut inside from the wing and stepped an Oadby defender to go in under the posts. We dominated all areas apart from the scrum were we somehow lost 3 against the head in the second half? Leo added a couple of great, length of the field efforts to tries from Charlie and Rorio. Sam W superbly setting up Rorio from the kick off, a clean take and a bullet pass for Rorio to speed onto. Charlie took his effort down the wing at pace bulldozing a couple of Oadby players on the way. Oadby never gave up however and that fighting spirit delivered them a try with the last play of the game.
We then played the winners of Newport and Old Laurentians - Old Laurentians. These boys are a decent side with a couple of outstanding players, one lad in particular gave us issues throughout the game with his incredible pace and it was this lad who left us standing to open the scoring for them. Charlie levelled it up a couple of minutes later following a penalty 20 yards out, Leo took the ball
in to contact and offloaded to Charlie to go over.
The first half was a rather scrappy but entertaining affair and we managed to get ourselves in front just before half time from Jude Lighnin'.
Early in the second half the fast Old Laurentian winger cut inside our flailing defence to level things up. We had a game on our hands!
From the resulting kickoff Old Laurentians spilled the ball, Charlie scooped it up and took full advantage steaming through there defence but was brought down 5 yards short, great support play from Joe M meant he was on hand to pick it up and go over to give us a narrow lead.
The Old Laurentian winger inevitably found himself on the ball a couple of minutes later and he jinked his way around 3-4 tackles to break our line. At this point he was clean through, you'd have put your mortgage on him scoring, Leo had other ideas, he came across like an exocet, somehow catching the winger on our line and holding him up. That superb try saving tackle seemed to puncture Old Laurentians and we then added a fourth when Matty spotted a gap, dropped his shoulder and skipped through to make it safe for us. Best game of the day.
Unfortunately the worst game followed, we were in the final with hosts Harrogate who quickly ran in a trio of tries in the first half, despite some valiant individual efforts the boys looked tired and ready for the coach home by half time. The second half carried on in the same fashion as the first half, the superb Harrogate fly half dictating play throughout.
Overall a great day, a good effort by all the boys in attendance, thanks to Harrogate, Oadby and Old Laurentians. Next week Fylde.
