Lancashire Cup success caps an excellent season.
The under 13's signed off the season in style with a hard fought draw away at Fylde in the final of the Lancashire cup. By virtue of being the away team Warrington were crowned winners.
In a game that i would have paid to watch, two quality sides played clean, skillful rugby of the highest order. The sun shone and the Fylde first team pitch looked immaculate if a little firm under foot.
We started on the front foot, initially dominating possession and keeping Fylde in there own half despite some ferocious Fylde rucking. We went through the phases and really should have opened the scoring, missing a couple of opportunities with centres cutting inside when an unopposed winger was free on the outside. Fylde gradually came into the game and looked dangerous with the ball in hand, there big forwards competing aggressively and there nippy backs showing good hands. They nearly opened the scoring on 10 minutes when the tall dark haired Fylde centre broke our line, Jack W in the full back position faced him, on paper it was a complete mismatch, however Jack put in a superb try saving tackle to bring him down at full pelt.
Five minutes later Fylde did open the scoring, inevitably it was Tobias who caused us problems all morning with his pace and aggressive running.
The game plan of banging in a few quick tries was out of the window, we had to come from behind. Five minutes later we did this, the ball worked its way out to Jude Lightnin' who went round the outside and only had the full back to beat, he drew his man and offloaded to Nathan who came tearing along the wing in support to score in the corner. Both sides defended well and gave very few penalties away, half time 1-1.
There was really nothing between the two teams at this stage, however we started to turn the screw courtesy of our solid forward line. Isaac in particular turning the ball over to us from seemingly innocuous situations and making yards whenever he got on the ball. Jude Lightnin' turned provider again 5 minutes into the second half this time passing inside to Christian who in turn stepped inside a couple of Fylde players to cross the line and give us the lead.
Two minutes later Fylde were back level again, they had us pinned back on our line, we were defending superbly and it took a high cross field kick which a static Tobias leapt up higher than anyone else to catch to undo us.
Five minutes later Nathan restored our lead following a well worked attack in which the ball went through several pairs of hands, he found himself with a a bit of space down the wing and he turned on the after burners to score.
Fylde wouldn't lie down though and yet again they equalised, through Tobias again with a great length of the field break. 3-3, a fair result.
This was a great ad' for junior rugby, 2 top teams playing at the top of there game. All the lads delivered a focused and determined performance, Christian had one of the best games i've seen him in, topped off with a great try. Leo and Rorio bossing the back line caused Fylde issues all morning alongside Lightnin'. Jack W at full back was often in the thick off the ruck with lads twice his size, he never backed down. Jude S never made a single mistake at scrum half orchestrating our attacks. James and Charlie didn't miss a tackle and these guys alongside the rest of the forward line really had to dig deep against a ferocious and large Fylde front line. The look of relief on some of the Fylde players when Nathan came of summed up his performance.
The entire squad contributed to our success today, whether or not they were selected, everyone played a part in getting Warrington to the final not just the lads mentioned here. A big shout out to Mark, Sharon and the Fylde team for the great hospitality, the ref who did a great job throughout and the lads for making us proud.
