Wire wobbly win over Wirral
Final game of the preliminary leagues saw Wire host Wirral at Walton Lea . Wire have regular played Wirral over the years usually in the coldest wettest conditions of mid winter, however the games have always been close with honours probably even over the seasons.
Wire welcomed back few players from injury but we're still short in few key positions and to keep the reshuffle to a minimum Taylor stepped in to play 9.
Unfortunately the reporter was sent back to the changing room for extra tape, but have been reliable informed Wire had a quick start and quick line speed from Wire allowed Alex to convert early penalty 3-0.
Wire then went to sleep and Wirral worked the ball with some smart offloads for a converted score under the sticks 3 -7.
Back to basics for Wire and they started to settle in to the game keeping the ball close but lacking any penetration.
Then James picked up a loose ball and upped the pace on a looping run broke the game line and quick recycling of the ball saw it worked down the right for Tomas to score not converted 8-7.
Number of missed tackles allowed Wirral to move forward on the left and out number the Wire defence for a score on the touchline , excellent conversion 8-14.
Both teams suffered few injuries and became apparent Wire had more replacements and this would be important come the last quarter. The injuries for Wire meant further reshuffle in the back line and more importantly the loss of Senior Colts Captain Harry who would step up to lead the team ?
Half time 8-14
A firm talk from the coaches fell on deaf ears as Wire started the half very slowly with lack of energy and enthusiasm soon turned to a mini disaster on the score board as Wire concede another converted score 8-21.
Wirral now playing with more zip and confidence, Wire being totally out enthused in all departments.
Behind the sticks key message was to forget about injured players , players playing out of position. Just think about the game in front of you on the pitch that you have to get back into.
The forwards now led some powerful drives from Jacob , George and Reece started to build platform to apply pressure on Wirral. Short pick and go from Drew for a converted score 15-21.
From the kick off Wire conceded penalty which again was well taken by the unconventional but very effect kicker 15-24.
Now with game about about to enter the last quarter , the pace needing upping and the extra replacements should have impact.
Strong blast from Cam up the middle and good hands released Will for a try with extras 22 -24.
Wirral walked back slowly and Wire sensed there was an opportunity for a controlled purple patch.
Again the forwards went through repeated sets and had Wirral walking backwards.Ended with a repeat converted score for Drew 29-24.
From the kick off Jacob broke through number of tackles , made good yards into the Wirral half. Then after months of practise managed to perfect pass to Tomas running a great support line, put on the afterburners to leave the cover defence behind for a try under the sticks with extras 36- 24.
An excellent 15mins work from the Wire , nearly thrown away as Wirral had a deserved final say with a converted push over score for final score 36-31.
Strange performance today as Wire struggled to adapt to few changes and focus on doing the basics. Having said that all credit to Wirral who turned up and dominated the game gave it a go and just came up short as ran out of energy towards the end.
Thanks for the game and good luck for the rest of the season.
Week off and then the Lancashire Cup before we return to the Colts league , full set of figures through to Christmas.
Let's turn up at training in numbers and work through it together.
