A clean sweep at Wilmslow
By Mike Malley
The boys turned defence into attack in a decent game for the Wire u15's.
The boys put in a good display of gritty rugby away at a damp Wilmslow this morning. The early signs all pointed to a tough game as we spilled a couple of straight forward early balls gifting Wilmslow possession. They subsequently went through the phases camped on our line but they simply could not break through. Time after time we repelled them as they threw everything apart from the kitchen sink at us, our defence was superb, Isaac, Jim,Owen and many others bounced them back time after time. Wilmslow looked after the ball well but our aggressive defence eventually led to an error and following a pressure relieving kick and a great chase from Matty who made it into the Wilmslow 22 we opened the scoring. Matty kicked for the Wilmslow line, the Full Back returned it to Sam Whalley who popped it up for Jacob Arrow to crash over from 10 yards out. A great sweeping passage of play straight out of defence. Matty converted.
Two minutes later we doubled the advantage, a great cross field kick from Jack B dropped straight into Whitts arms and a quickstep put him in. Matty converted again.
Despite all the Wilmslow possession and territorial advantage they found themselves 14 down at half time and we quickly turned the screw in the second half running in a further 6 unanswered tries as we quickly snuffed any hopes they had of a come back.
Jack B took over the kicking following great tries from Whitt, Jim and Lightning, one in particular was a great effort from the line. Nathan also added a try breaking 50 metres and holding of 2 tacklers to score as did Jack Dunn with some great support play putting him in the right place for Jim to pop it up to on the line. Jack B added the other with another great break and Jacob nearly got a second when he broke half the length of the pitch only to get caught 10 metres short, however the subsequent cross field kick found Cam Sutcliffe on the overlap to go in for his first try for the team. Comedy moment of the day was Jacob Arrow's toe bung conversion bouncing of the up right!
Sam Whalley, Jacob A, Nathan, Whit, all had superb games today with a great work rate. To be honest, after the slow start all the lads put in a shift against a good side, nilling them in the process.
Thanks to Wilmslow for the warm welcome and the ref for officiating. Next week, a double header with both Ashby and Widnes visiting.
