Convincing Victory over Good Opposition
By Mike Malley
Warrington win a tough fought match.
The U15s eased to victory in a cup tie with an oppostion that dominated possessin but just couldn't turn the yards into tries.
It all started rather typically for us with a lot of missed tackles and an early penalty - one of far too that we would give away in the match - but we soon settled down and within the first ten minutes a great run from Nathan, who was brought doiwn just short of their line, lead to a kick over ino the right corner which Leo gathered and touched down. Waterloo responded well from the KO and opted for a scrum from another penalty, but despite some good running only succeeded in throwing a possible pass for a try into touch.
The play moved up and down the pitch - mostly in our half unfortunately, but when Waterloo opt for another scrum in their 22 and mess it up we're going to take advantage!. A good drive from our forwards secures the ball which finds itself once again in Rorio's hands who goes over for his second in hs favourite corner. This time Matty kicks a great conversion to put us 12.0 nil up.
Waterloo come back at us but are still throwing th ball to air - fortunately they can't capitalise on the many penalties we are givint away, and despire a spirited attack on our line in the final 10 minute our defence holds resolute to keep them of the score line. Another penalty gives them chance to clear their lines just before the half time whistle.
Second half. The half time oranges haven't helped yet and we are still in our own half giving away penalties. Fortunately our defence is impecable, especially from Jim, and we we hold them off until a sustained attack from Waterloo, which results in yet more penalties gives them their first unconverted try. 12 - 5 to Warrington.
This seems to wake us up and we run through phase after phase, finally allowing Rorio to break through into the corner for his hat-trick. Not converted. We up our pace in the final quarter. A bullocking run from Charlie, nearly puts Jack Whit over but he can't quite gather a loose ball. Another turnover sees a well worked ball move out to Jack Darbs to score, Jack Bailey converts. And with the pressure now on we finish off with a fluid run from Leo to score under the posts. Matty converts. Final score 31-5 to the Wire.
Many thanks to Waterloo for a great, well fought game and to Garry for, once again, exemplary refereeeing (his number was requested by the Waterloo manager to ref for them!) It was a good and deserved result for us, even though the score line flatters us a bit - a couple more on the Waterloo scoreline would have been just. We also gave away too many penalties, most through lack of care in the rucks, and would be punished for that against in many matches. Something for the coaches! But meanwhile onwards to the quarters.
