A Game of 2 halves
By Mike Malley
Literally - A game of 2 halves!
In a first half to forget the boys quite simply didn't turn up against a fired up Stockport but managed to rescue some pride by taking the second half.
From the kick off whilst we were still getting set and rubbing sleep out of our eyes Stockport ran in the first of 5 unanswered tries, following it up 2 minutes later with a second & third and from that kick off the full back received the ball and ran straight through our static defence for the fourth. A fifth came from an intercept in a completely one sided first half. What was most disappointing was the lack of leaders amongst the boys with no one stepping up to take responsibility alongside shambolic tackling which allowed Stockport to cut through our defense with ease.
The half time message was to win the second half and salvage some pride, the game might have been a tough ask at 31 - 0 down but the boys did as they were asked. It looked like a different pack as we cut out the errors, looked after the ball and started to compete in the rucks, all of which unsettled the Stockport forwards and allowed Nathan, CJ, Jude Smith and Lightning to start throwing the ball about a bit. Within 2 minutes Nathan showed great footballing skills to kick a loose ball down field 2-3 times from our 22 pursued by 3-4 Stockport players and then managed to drop on the ball to pull a try back, Jude S converted.
Jack Dunn was superb on the wing today, catching a couple of high balls and making good yards down the left and an interchange between him and Lightning had the Stockport players going round in circles as Lightning added a second converted try. Five minutes later a well worked rev D left a huge gap for lightning to go straight through the middle to quieten down the Stockport bench.
We had other opportunities, Sean had a great drive and nearly broke through after making 30 yards , CJ, Jude and Lightning also really taking the game to Stockport in the second half. Sam W was excellent again, both Riley, Ed and Sam sorted out the tackling issues in the second period but ultimately the damage was done in the first half.
We showed character to come back the way we did but we need to learn to fire from the first minute! Thanks to Stockport for the hospitality, next week Glossop.
