Ten points behind at half time, Warrington’s second string rallied in the second half but discovered they had left it too late in a surprise loss to a side which is currently at the bottom of Sale Sharks Division 1. The result sees them fall to fourth in the league, just one point behind local rivals Broughton Park.
Altrincham were quick off the mark and soon established a 17-0 lead. Warrington responded with a good try from Nick Stevens, converted by Shaun McDermott and the sides turned round with Altrincham leading by 17-7.
The home side’s lead was soon extended with two further unconverted tries before Luke Turner cut the deficit, only for Altrincham to hammer the final nail in the coffin with an interception try from the restart. Warrington finished strongly but were unable to add to their score.
“A disappointing result,” was the summing up of skipper Craig Byrne. “We have Penrith at home next week, so hopefully we can return to winning ways.”
