“He was quite a lad and a very good player. In his earlier days, when he was 18, he played several games for the Warrington R League Club as a prop, as I remember, before a broken leg ended that. At one time he had a Lancashire RU Trial. That proved quite an embarrassment for Lancashire when they discovered the they had committed the, then, most horrible of sins and had contaminated themselves and everybody at the trial by playing an ex-Professional. Alan had apparently applied to be reinstated as a Rugby Union player on the strength of having been called up by Lancashire for a trial. Needless to say, Lancashire never replied.
I also remember how much he enjoyed his Saturday nights after the matches---so much so that he never got home until late every Saturday night, much to Pat's annoyance.
She once gave me a right telling-off, when I was Club Captain, about Selection. Apparently, Alan had told her that the Club always picked him for ‘Away’ matches every week and he didn't like to refuse.
The old players are just fading away----hope they take their boots when they go as I believe that Rugby is played in Heaven. We should have a pretty good Squad up there.
Those were the days!!.”
The Club send our heartfelt condolences to son Gavin and family on their loss.
