Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother’s Day

A sunny sky couldn’t hide the conditions underfoot with puddles on the pitch and mud everywhere it looked as though it wouldn’t be a day for running rugby and the encounter with Chester looked difficult on paper, both teams being semi-finalists in their respective cups.

With the echoes of ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ along the touchline, how else would they spend their Sundays? Chester get us underway and what is this we see? Warrington catch the ball from a kick off, it should be mother’s day every Sunday.

From the ensuing ruck a Warrington penalty, Jack wins the lineout, nice play from Scott and JP release the backs and Benny races over to score. JP missed conversion 0 - 5.

Chester regain possession from the restart and keep it in the forwards, struggling to make ground, they go side to side and although keeping hold of the ball they fail to make any inroads into the Warrington half, turnover ball and a break down the left forces Chester to clear to touch, clean ball from the lineout by Jack and the backs are free again making light of the conditions to find Riggers out wide stepping inside the fullback to score. JP conversion 0 – 12.

Roma is next on the score sheet, continuing his rich vein of form, after good play from Matt and Kellan, Roma receives the ball stationary on halfway and from a standing start he evades 3 would be tacklers to race clear. JP conversion 0 – 19.

Chester are finding it difficult to live with the Warrington pace and ability to handle in the conditions, a break from Benny allows the forwards to recycle quickly and JP forces his way over in the corner. JP missed conversion 0 – 24.

The forwards continue to dominate making yards, allowing the backs plenty of room, Ollie finds Benny out wide and he races in from 30 yards. JP conversion hits post 0 – 29.

The forwards are really on top making light of the conditions. Andy, Matt & Kellan make yards downfield, a loose ball is pounced on by Jack Barker who races like a gazelle on a 30 yard break, quick recycling and the ball is in Josh’s hands lurking at outside centre, a dummy, a side step and another try. Missed conversion 0 – 34.

Halftime 0 – 34

The conditions begin to tell on both teams, Chester struggling to make any ground and Warrington looked to have taken their foot off the gas, however a flying tackle from Roma as he looked like an exocet missile, nearly cutting the Chester winger in half seemed to reenergize the boys. A scrappy period of play resulted in Warrington pressure. Eddie finds Scott who leaves four would be tacklers in his wake to score, thoroughly deserved on today’s performance. Luke conversion 0 – 41

Chester eventually get some reward for their efforts, the centre breaks 3 tacklers to race 30 yards to score under the posts. Successful conversion 7 – 41

The conditions are winning now, very scrappy play with the ball seeming to be more on the ground than in hand. Both teams look tired in their mud covered kits until Andy picks up a loose ball to score from 10 yards. Luke (Don Fox) missed conversion 7 – 46

One final push from Chester forces a line out on the Warrington line, miscommunication between Ewan and Jack and the loose ball is pounced on by the home team hooker to barge his way over. Missed conversion 12 – 46

Under the conditions it was an excellent team performance with the forwards providing a solid platform for the team to exploit the opposition. Fantastic displays from Jack B, Scott, Josh, Andy, Matt & Kellan.
