Warrington’s first past players’ reunion at Stockton Lane was the occasion for a valediction to 6 former club members, Doug Chamberlain, Wes Brown, Brian McLoughlin, Paul Anderson, Mick Garlick and John Kellett, all of whom had passed away in recent months.
A big vote of thanks to all families and past players who attended when memories of the 6 club members were given by Dave Roughley, Fred Clarkson, Andy Kellett, club President John Callender.
Past President Dave Jervis recited his ‘Ode’ to Brian McLoughlin reproduced below by kind permission of Sarah - Brian’s daughter.
“I’m proud that Brian was my friend
That’s why I’m here today.
But I have one big regret
That I never saw him play.
Brian was no Raging Bull,
He was not a rampant beast.
But you’d always spot him on the field
By his shorts – precisely creased.
Brian loved this sport of ours,
At away games and at home.
And just in case he took a knock,
He always had a comb.
And when he finally hung his boots,
Not for him past glories’ dreams.
No, he was there each Saturday
To greet refs – and opposing teams.
When we heard that Brian died
It came as quite a shock.
But we won’t forget you little man,
So, here’s to you – McLough.”
The event was well attended by past players and supporters a number of which had travelled a good distance, special mention to Frank Burrows who was probably the oldest past player in attendance, good to see Phil & Tim Stansfield, Alan Buckley and Paul Cooper. Quote of the day from Dave Broadbent “Good to be with so many players who I penalised but seriously to honour our friends”
Thanks goes Paul Broadbent who organized the ‘pies’, Steve Hennessey for rallying the ’troops’, Glynis Rockey & Chris Kellett for their endeavours on catering and hard working bar staff.
Great ‘do’ see you all again soon.
