Despite this success, this was one of the few occasions when the visitors tried to get their backs involved, preferring instead to keep the ball in the forwards to make progress albeit laboriously. This one dimensional approach bore little fruit against a well organised and fast up Warrington defence which forced spills and as often as not regained possession.
Warrington bounced back immediately when LSH spilled the ball trying to run the ball out of their own 22 from the restart. Centre Ryan Newton levelled the score touching down wide on the left.
5-5
Five minutes later, the same scenario. Under pressure from Warrington, the visitors spilled the ball as they attempted to run out and this time back row Joe Craven was the beneficiary, snatching up the loose ball and piling over from 30m out. JP Hudson added the extras. 12-5
With fifteen minute gone, Hudson’s long kick from a penalty earned Warrington a line out deep in the LSH 22. Secure possession from Jonny Evans, a few forward phases and full back Tom McEniff was in for Warrington’s third try.
McEniff’s sharp tackling was instrumental in Warrington’s fourth try forcing LSH to knock on. Winger Jude Lightfoot, also up sharp, hacked on but Newton won the race to the touch down, JP Hudson added the extras. 24-5
Prop Tom Green was next on the scoreboard from short range benefitting from a magnificent earlier rampage from middle rower Will Morgan.
With ten minutes to the interval winger Kyle Cherrett looked as if he had scored but had put a foot in touch. Two minutes later Cherrett was again denied, judged to have been held up over the line.
There was no denying Harry Kellett, however, as he ploughed over from short range running full tilt onto a short pass, Hudson converting 36-5
Tempers frayed just before half time as a bit of niggling escalated, perhaps by the perception that tackles were getting to high and going unpunished. The half time whistle brought the argy bargy to a stop.
HT 36-5
Five minutes in, a fine kick from Hudson to the corner forced LSH onto their 5m line. Although Warrington secured the line-out ball they were held up over the line for a drop out to the defenders. Morgan secured the restart and barged his way into the LSH 22. A skilful off load to Evans, followed by another to Oli Hudson and finally to Danny Fleming put the captain under the posts for Warrington’s seventh try, Hudson with an easy conversion. 43-5
This early flair, however, was not continued and the second half, much as last week, was short of the running rugby which characterised the first. LSH had the benefit of more possession but were generally contained by Warrington, or were let down by poor handling at crucial moments.
Warrington’s kicking was not as focused, giving the visitors too much time to collect the ball and mount a counter.
In the last minute of the game LSH’ s tactics finally brought dividends as they went over for their second try after a welter of phases of pick and go.
