Warrington failed to collect the starting kick and immediately found themselves under pressure in their own 22. After numerous phases from the home forwards, robustly resisted notably by Andy Kellett and Austin Carr, BP were awarded a penalty for a Warrington off-side and readily accepted an easy 3 points. 3-0
From the restart, however, BP in turn failed to secure, and Warrington made good use of their possession with JP Hudson making a nice break to take the ball up to the BP line where they were awarded a scrum. BP we’re getting the edge in the set piece and cleared their line with a good kick but, courtesy of a deft kick from Archie Kellett, Warrington were soon back knocking on the door. This time it was Warrington’s scrum and No8 captain Danny Fleming was unstoppable with his pick up from the back. 3-5
Five minutes later, centre Tom McEniff beat the defence with his trade mark mazey running, kick through and collect for Warrington’s second try, Hudson converted 3-12
The home side, however, gained possession from the restart. A well-executed rolling maul took them up to the Warrington try line but Warrington just managed to deny them the final metre. Nevertheless, this success was short lived as Warrington spilled the ball in their own 22 as they ran the ball out from defence giving a scrum to BP. The home side moved the ball confidently through the hands to put their winger in wide on the right. 10-12
Just before the interval Hudson converted a penalty from within the BP 22 to add three points to Warrington’s thin cushion.
HT 10-15
An impressive start to the second half came from a magnificent break by centre Max Caldwell, expanded upon by fellow centre McEniff and finished off under the posts by winger Luke Turner, Hudson converted. 10-22
BP bounced back almost immediately, however, when Warrington could not retain possession from the restart, good back play building on some forward phases which were well contained by Warrington. 15-22
With fifteen minutes gone, Luke Turner playing at full back collected a high kick and combining well with scrum half Jack Whittaker took the ball up to half way. Snappy recycling got the ball to centre McEniff whose neat kick and chase earned him his second try. 15-27
Five minutes later, Whittaker was again in enabling action, this time linking with Archie Kellett to take the ball to the BP line where Turner finished the move, Hudson again with the conversion. 15-34
More attacking play opened up a scoring opportunity for winger Cherrett but the ball was turned inside and the score was thwarted.
With ten minutes to go BP gained a scrum on the Warrington 5m line. With superiority in this aspect of the game the home side went for a push over try. Although they had the Warrington pack retreating they fumbled the pickup and were denied the score. This did not relieve the pressure on Warrington for long, however, as the home side were awarded a penalty as they continued to press and went over from a short penalty with minutes left in the game.
FT 22-34
Although Warrington again racked up a bonus point in their pursuit of promotion, their willingness to attack from all quarters was, on occasion, more reckless than enterprising. The wet conditions contributed to numerous unforced errors which handed the initiative back to the opposition who coped better with the slippery ball. Numerous changes in the team seemed to take the edge off Warrington’s customary speed to the break down detracting at times from Warrington’s usual attacking pace.
