This, however, was one of the few occasions Sefton looked dangerous as the Warrington defence was solid and the hefty boot of mastermind Matt Beeley ensured the game was played predominantly in the Sefton half. A cross kick from Beeley and harassing chase from terrier Jack Rigby on the wing pinned Sefton in the corner. Although Warrington were unable to secure clean ball on this occasion they made no mistake in the twelfth minute on the other side of the pitch. A short ball to Harry Kellett at the front caught Sefton off guard and Sam Bennett barged over from 2 metres out when the ball was returned to him.5-7.
Warrington were in exuberant mood, moving the ball quickly through the phases with rehearsed moves resulting, in the twentieth minute, in Warrington’s second try from centre Ryan Newton from an inside pass from winger Luke Turner. Beeley added the extras to put Warrington into the lead 12-7.
Ten minutes later a characteristic break from middle rower Josh Downes took the ball to the half-way line. Tom McNiff then reaped the benefit as quick recycle and an inch perfect kick to the corner from Beeley gave the nippy fullback Warrington’s third try.
Half time 17-7
McNiff was immediately in action in the second half, latching on to another cross kick from Beeley and tossing an overhead pass back to Sam Bennett, who, having the game of his life, crashed over for his second try.22-7
A yellow card to Sefton for a deliberate knock-on compounded the visitors’ woes and rendered it easier for winger Rigby to get on the score sheet five minutes later. 27-7
Ten minutes after that Downes, earned just rewards for all his hard yards, picking up quickly from the back of a ruck and bursting over under the posts. Turner converted. 34-7
Buoyed with a comfortable cushion, Warrington really began to throw the ball about with much of the action stemming from scrum-half Harrison Turner whose speedy passing and elusive running opened play up. As often happens, with confidence comes success. Some of the most outrageous off loads stuck, leading to further tries from Rigby and Cherrett, Turner adding a conversion. 46-7..
With two minutes to go full back McNiff rounded off Warrington’s nine try bonanza again chasing down a kick this time from back rower Austin Carr.
FT 51-7
Sefton simply had no answer to Warrington’s youthful speed and elusiveness and as the game progressed Warrington’s superior fitness became more obvious. Notable successes were Warrington’s rehearsed moves which brought dividends even with the changing personnel in the back division.
