Warrington started with their customary panache and early breaks from winger Kyle Cherrett and full back Tom McEniff with their distinctive and contrasting styles foretold of things to come. However, it was back rower Joe Craven, returning after injury, who opened Warrington’s tally in the third minute directly from a short penalty just 10m from the TMV line. JP Hudson added the conversion. 7-0
Due to injuries to Warrington’s regular stand offs, Hudson had had to step into stand-off boots for the day but as a crucial pivot in Warrington’s numerous and varied attacks it was certainly not obvious he was new to the position.
McEniff initiated Warrington’s second try in the tenth minute with a mercurial run from deep. Three more superb off loads from Morgan, Craven and Whittaker kept the ball alive for middle row Jonny Evans to complete the score. Extras from of Hudson. 14-0
Winger Luke Turner added Warrington’s third try, looping round from his left wing position to score in the opposite corner and bringing Warrington’s scoring rate to a point a minute. Prop Sam Bennett then added the bonus point try rounding off a great line-out take by Evans and a well-rehearsed drive from the rest of the pack. Hudson added the extras for both. 28-0
Turner added his second try from a well weighted cross kick, collecting the ball on the TMV 10m line and haring over under the posts. Hudson kicked the easy conversion. 35-0
With ten minutes to half-time, the visitors began to mount their first real pressure of the game. They retained the ball in the forwards and camped on the Warrington line. Warrington kept their line intact but at the cost of two yellow cards for persistent infringements in the red zone. One to back row Steve Antrobus and one to Danny Newens being reblooded at stand-off after a considerable lay off.
HT 35-0
In the second half, TMV kept up their pressure on Warrington making the most of their two-man advantage to drive a maul 30m up field and kick deep into the Warrington 22. Warrington countered but just as it looked that they were going to break out, the ball was dropped. TMV recovered possession, chipped over the Warrington defence and registered their only try. 35-7
Warrington were soon back on the offensive, however, gaining a line-out just 10m from the TMV line. In a well-rehearsed move, prop Tom Green received a short ball at the front of the line-out and returned it to hooker and thrower-in Alex Stewart for Warrington’s sixth try. 40-0
From the restart, a magic piece of handling from centre Archie Kellett under pressure kept the ball alive for fellow centre Ryan Newton who broke up to half-way. A crisp pass to McEniff beat the last of the defence and the full back dashed over under the posts. Hudson converted. 47-0
With fifteen minutes to go Evans added his second try receiving the pass from the fast hands of Bennett and with ten to go workhorse second rower Will Morgan added his name to the score sheet on a pass from Craven. 59-7
Although the visitors mounted more of a challenge in the second half through the close range drives of their pack, Warrington defended with a determination and twice held them up over the line. In the closing minute of the game, a tackle off the ball on winger Turner, perhaps due to frustration at being so close but thwarted, led to a brawl. After things calmed down, the referee sensibly blew for the end of the game and sweetness and light ensued.
