Warrington 7 Firwood Waterloo 17
Warrington’s search for a morale-boosting win, in what could be a testing season, continues after a difficult game against a resilient Waterloo side. However, there were several promising signs that there might yet be light at the end of a currently dark tunnel.
For the first time this season, Warrington enjoyed the majority of both possession and territory for most of the first half. Unfortunately, although the Warrington back pressurised the opposition line for prolonged periods, they were unable to turn their superiority into points and a certain try went begging when the ball was knocked on over the line. The Warrington pressure continued, with Danny Fleming, Phil Lynch and Johnny Evans leading the charge.
Eventually, Waterloo managed to work their way into Warrington territory and, against the run of play, took the lead shortly before half time with a well-struck penalty.
The opening exchanges of the second period saw a resurgent Waterloo and they were duly rewarded when they put together an excellent phase which resulted in their left winger sliding over in the corner for a try which was converted.
Warrington came back strongly but a combination of over-eagerness and lack of creativity in attack meant that they were unable to cross the opposition line. Once more against the run of play, it was the visitors who scored next with a second converted try. Warrington had the last word when they finally managed to score through Jack Hannon and Darren Norman converted to make the final score 7-17.
“The final tally was probably not a fair reflection of the match,” remarked coach Andy Roberts. “Ours was a performance bristling with effort and determination and we have many positives to take away. I am sure we can improve and eventually move up the league table.”
