2nd Team Report for Saturday 26th April 2025

TYLDESLEY 2ND XV 0 - 52 WARRINGTON 2ND XV

This resounding win in the last game of the season tied Warrington with Eccles 3rd XV in second place, both with 78pts, in the league behind Wigan 2nd XV who were unbeaten all season but with a poorer points difference.

In ideal conditions, Warrington attacked from the start playing within the Tyldesley 22 and forcing numerous penalties as the home side defended desperately. Warrington twice declined an easy 3 points but were vindicated when Luke Turner from full back took an inside ball from winger Mark Tickle for Warrington’s first try in the fifth minute. Captain Andy Almond added the conversion. 0-7

After another ten minutes of constant Warrington pressure, Almond playing at scrum half added his first try as the ball squirted out from a scrum on the Tyldesley 5m line when the Warrington pack had the home team retreating in total disarray. 0-14

Tyldesley now began to retain some possession recycling the ball well and feeding some strong runners but, although the game was now being played in their territory, Warrington’s uncompromising defence with back rowers Sam Whalley and Andy Kellett to the fore kept on top.

In the twenty fifth minute, a good call from winger Ryan Eastwood earned him an inside pass from Turner which opened the Tyldesley defence but no try was awarded as the pass was judged forward. Two minutes later, on the opposite wing, Tickle, too, just missed a try when his kick was just too strong for his chase.

In the last play of the half, with the front row of Jack Sigley, Sam Bennett and Louis Freeman, continuing to tie their opposition in knots, scrum half Almond again reaped the benefit snapping up the loose ball and zipping it out to centre Ryan Newton who, recovering the ball from a would-be Tyldesley interception, battled over for Warrington’s third try.

Half time 0-19.

Right from the restart, a midfield break by Kellett, carried on by workhorse Ty Hamblett, got the ball to Turner on the wing on the Tyldesley 22. Despite the attention of three defenders the full back managed to avoid being bundled into touch and recorded Warrington’s fourth try. 0-24

Centre Will Jones was next on the score board when Warrington’s dominance in the scrum provided a steady launchpad for an attack from deep in the Tyldesley half, Almond converted. 0-31

From the restart Jones was again in the action immediately taking the ball back into Tyldesley territory. Middle row Jack Barker picked up quickly from the break down and fed Almond for his second try. 0-38

Almond added his third try a few minutes later expertly playing football to get the ball over the try line when it popped out the back of a retreating Tyldesley scrum. 0-45

Again from the restart, a break up the middle from Whalley split the flagging Tyldesley defence and centre Newton was on hand to finish with Warrington’s eighth try. 0-52

Although Tyldesley were unable to maintain consistent possession, when they did get the ball there was no lack of determination when they ran at the Warrington defence. Equally there was no lack of application in Warrington’s defence as exemplified in the last tackle of the game when Kellett, giving away at least three stone (20kgs), dropped the Tyldesley runner on a sixpence.

Full time 0-52

Captain Andy Almond had a fine afternoon with hat trick of tries and converting 6 with the boot so congratulations to him and the team for the way he has led them to a very creditable position in the NOWIRUL County Couriers Division 3 Central League.
