Sandbach 2nd XV 57 Warrington 2nd XV 17
Warrington’s second string was well beaten by a well-drilled Sandbach outfit, in a game which was really over by half time. Although promotion is now not on the cards, Warrington can still look forward to finishing third in the Sale Sharks Division 1 if they manage to beat fourth placed Broughton Park 2nd XV, when they entertain Broughton Park 2nd XV at Walton Lea Road on 23rd March.
The excellent Sandbach side raced into an early lead with four tries, two of which were converted before Warrington got on the score sheet when man-of-the-match Jack Stride, crossed to make the half time score 24-5.
The home side increased their lead within ten minutes of the restart with an unconverted try but Warrington struck back with an opportunistic effort from stand-off Olly Hudson, converted by Max Caldwell.
The Sandbach lead was then further reduced when veteran Dan Johnston crashed over for a rare, but well deserved, try. But that would be the last time that Warrington would trouble the scoreboard as Sandbach opened up to score a further, unanswered 28 points.
“No excuses,” said skipper Craig Byrne. “On the day, they were just too good for us, although I couldn’t fault the effort of every Warrington player on the field. We now look forward to the Broughton Park game.”
