20-10 against a strong well drilled Chester

Sunday saw Warrington play their first home match of the new season, and what an impressive performance they put in to defeat Chester. The weather was determined to play its part, the glorious sunshine allowing both teams to use the ball and attack each other.
The first part of the game was a real arm wrestle between the teams, not surprising given the last three matches between the two team have resulted in a draw and one win each. Both teams had periods with the ball and attacked each other, but the defences were resolute in keeping each other out.

Warrington then lit up the game with a superb attacking move into the corner, but unfortunately overran the dead ball line, but it wasn’t long before we took the lead, Lawson Vella finishing a great passage of play by powering over. Warrington had most of the ball for the remainder of the half and only great defence and handling errors kept them from increasing their lead. But they were handed a sharp reminder of Chester’s quality, when they were slow playing the ball from a ruck and allowed Chester to intercept and run in the levelling score.

That score only served to annoy Warrington as they stepped up their game, from an already impressive level, to score 3 unanswered tries. Kieran O’Leary finished off a great move in the corner that went through several pairs of hands, really putting into action the work they have been doing in training. Logan Jones then with the third finishing off a move that was epitomised by superb support running and offloading creating holes in the defence.

Equally as impressive as the attack was Warrington’s defence, they were superb from start to finish, really putting pressure on Chester’s attack with the pace and ferocity of their defensive line and the quality of their tackling. It was this defence that created the opportunity for Warrington’s final try, and the pick of the day. The defence forced and error from Chester, Logan Jones attacked them on the blindside, beat several defenders for pace and power, before kicking over the full back, regathering and touching down for the score.

But Chester weren’t done yet, they were determined to finish strongly, and a series of strong, fast, runs found holes in the Warrington defence, resulting in a penalty, which they tapped quickly and got through, to touch down for the games final score. Final result was 20 – 10 to Warrington.

Warrington had so many impressive performances, that is was difficult to pick a star player, but this week went to Joel Dewhurst-Doyle, he had to move positions several times to cover injuries and rotation, but was superb in all of them and tackled anyone that came near him with perfect technique.

Next week see the U13s in action against Wigan in the Lancashire Cup Competition. This is yet again another step up in opposition with Wigan being on of the best side in the region.

Sunday 11:00 at GSC if you’re wanting to watch.
