The u16's get a much needed 70 minutes under the belt.
After several weeks of rain and cancelled games it was a welcome sight to see a dry, firm, sunny pitch away at Southport this morning. With a cup quarter final looming it was important to get some game time in beforehand.
The opening phases belonged to Warrington and it wasn't long before we opened the scoring, Jude L going in at the corner following a couple of minutes of play in the Southport half. Unfortunately the lads looked a little rusty in a somewhat disjointed performance, this coupled with an increasing penalty count (for both sides) meant the game didn't really flow. When ever we got into a promising position we seemed to either spill the ball or make the wrong decision. Despite this we played most of the game in the Southport half and it wasn't until 25 minutes in that our dominance delivered us the second try. Nathan reacted first when a Southport player spilled a pass 20 metres out, he scooped it up to go in under the posts making for an easy conversion for Cam S. The scoreline stayed the same until half time.
Southport were still in the game at this point but it was Warrington who again scored first, almost from the kickoff Jim made a superb break and with a covering player still to beat he showed a superb step to leave the fullback flailing at thin air whist he went in under the posts.
Ten minutes later Nathan scored his second try, he made a superb length of the field break down the line and sheer pace took him clear to score.
We continued to dominate in the set piece, both the lineout and scrum was good today as was our defence to keep a good Southport side nilled.
Jim finished off the scoring, running a great line to exploit a huge gap in the Southport defence to give us a 0-33 win. We were understandably rusty today although some players did stand out. Nathan, CJ and Jim were all excellent, Suty on the wing had Southport back tracking all morning and Ed had a great game physically dominating the Southport pack.
We'll need to step it up next week, Fleetwood in the cup so no room for rustiness!!
